During the 14th Cyprus International Film Festival that was held in Nicosia November 22-30, 2019, a monodrama “Iron Warrioresses – Women Volunteers in the First World War” was presented, which is written, directed and performed by a Serbian actor Jelena Mila.

With this story about women warriors and volunteers in the Balkans during the First World War, as well as during the uprisings and wars that preceded (The Rebelion of Nevesinje (Nevesinje Gun) in 1875, the Uprising against the Ottoman Turks, the First and the Second Balkan War) and the one that followed (the Second World War and the conflicts during the 1990’s), the author opened an image of the war’s futility and of the necessity to preserve life and freedom.

According to the author’s words, the text was written based on the original documents, authentic statements and excerpts from the biographies of real women warriors (Milunka Savić, Vasilija Vukotić, Milica Marka Miljanova Popović, Antonija Javornik, Flora Sandes, Nadežda Petrović, Delfa Ivanić, Elsi Inglis, Katarina Šturcenger, Diana Budisavljević, Zorica Sara Mitić, Sofija Jovanović, Mileva Marić Ajnštajn, Žana Merkus, Meri Geldvin and other women volunteers – soldiers, humanitarian workers and nurses, not only Serbian, but also English, American, Austrian women...).

With their superhuman efforts and commitment, they’ve inspired correctness and persistence, and as an example to be admired and followed, they became the witnesses of the inhumane times of war.

During this festival, the mentioned monodrama received an award for equality 50/50, which was presented to the author on the 30th of November 2019 in Nicosia.

On the occasion of the screening of this movie, Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Nicosia and the honorary consul K. Eliades organized a reception for the representatives of Serbian diaspora in Cyprus.
