Printer Friendly Version SELAKOVIC: RELATIONS WITH CYPRUS BASED ON FRIENDSHIP AND TRUST @ 16 March 2021 11:57 AM

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia Nikola Selakovic met today with Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus Demetrios Theophylactou.

In the talks, the Head of Serbian diplomacy emphasized that our country attached great importance to relations with Cyprus, which were based on firm friendship, mutual trust, historically confirmed closeness and solidarity between the two peoples.

Minister Selakovic reminded that this was also evidenced by the fact that his first bilateral visit after taking office had been to Nicosia.

Minister Selakovic pointed out that Serbia was interested in continuing the political dialogue and exchange of visits at all levels, and in that context he expressed hope that the epidemiological situation would permit the holding of the Third Joint Session of the two Governments, this time in Belgrade.

The Serbian Foreign Minister emphasized that Serbia highly valued the engagement of Cyprus in European institutions and them presenting the efforts that Serbia was making to fulfill its obligations in the accession process, including Chapters 23 and 24.

Selakovic said that our country highly respected the continuous support of Cyprus to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia, as well as that it sincerely appreciated the support and engagement of that country in preventing membership of the so-called "Kosovo" in international organizations.

Furthermore, the Minister pointed out that our country extended full and unreserved support to the efforts of Cyprus to resolve its most important national issue, the preservation of territorial integrity and sovereignty, on the basis of relevant UN resolutions and an agreement between the two sides.

Serbia has a special interest to further promote the economic cooperation in the field of investments, the Minister underlined reminding that our country ranks among the European leaders in attracting foreign direct investments.

Minister Selakovic expressed the expectation that he would have the opportunity to welcome the foreign ministers of Cyprus and Greece in Belgrade on 5 April, and to host a trilateral meeting of heads of diplomacy of the three fraternal and friendly countries.
